The pros and cons of living in an apartment over a house

Living in a big house with a white picket fence out front isn’t for everyone. For one, buying a house is expensive, particular if you live in Sydney or Melbourne, and it can also be a lot of hard work to keep it well maintained.

But is living in a smaller property like an apartment a good alternative option?

Let’s weigh up some pros and cons of apartment living to help you decide.

Pros

Low-maintenance – A smaller home means there is less to clean and look after. Plus, the apartment building itself will be looked after by the building management, so there’s not much for you to do except sit back and enjoy.

Price – Apartments are usually cheaper than houses in the same area. This makes them a great option for people looking to buy on a limited budget.

Facilities – Many apartment buildings have some great facilities on offer for residents. These include things such as gyms, pools, recreation spaces and more.

Convenience – Apartments tend to be located close to where all the action is, so by living in one you may save yourself a lot of time commuting.

Safe and secure – In general, living in an apartment may feel more secure. This can be good for people living alone or those who want to feel comfortable about locking up and leaving for long periods of time.

Cons

Less space – While this can be a perk too, it is also one of the drawbacks of apartment living. Apartments typically have less internal living space than houses, which can make things like entertaining large groups tricky. Having adequate building amenities can help compensate for this drawback however.

Closer to neighbours – There’s no denying that you will be closer to your neighbours than if you lived in a house. This could mean that you’re more likely to hear those around you, and could result in less privacy for you too.

Parking – Not every apartment comes with a parking space, so this is something you will need to keep in mind. Even if you have a park however, your visitors may be forced to park on the street.

Rules and limitations – You may have certain rules you need to abide by within the grounds of the apartment complex, or there may be limitations on things like renovations. Make sure you’re aware of any rules or guidelines before moving to an apartment and that you’re happy to abide by them.
